Book Review: “Silencing Sharks” by John Hope

It can often be quite a surprise when you find out that someone you know has written a book. It’s even more of a surprise when you find out that your first college roommate has written a whole lot of them.

In this case, the college roommate is John Hope, and his most recent book is Silencing Sharks. It’s the story of Peter Bench (yes, I got the reference), a deaf 13-year-old boy who learns that he can hear sharks — and the sharks need his help.

SIX OF THE BEST… efficiency-increasing Chrome extensions

I’ve been using Google Chrome for many a year now, and while some complain of its resource hogging, I still feel like it’s the best browser for me. Google already knows all of my personal information; might as well let them personalize things for me, right?

But even power users can use a little something to supercharge their experiences with their browsers. In that vein, here are six of the best efficiency-increasing Chrome extensions (that I currently use).

submission and publication update for August 2016

It’s been a slow month for writing — I moved, and I got married. But here’s an update all the same.

PUBLISHED

The only thing that came out this month was my narration of “Make a Choice” by John McIlveen, over at Tales to Terrify.

CONSIDERING

Abyss and Apex, AE, Angry Robot Books, Asimov’s, Automobilia, Binge Watching Cure, Blue Monday Review, Bourbon Penn, Breakroom Stories, Capricious, Crossed Lines, Deep Magic, ECM Network, Electric Literature, Escape Pod, Fox & Raven Publishing, Pear Tree Press, Persistent Visions, Pseudopod, Read Short Fiction, Straeon, Stoneslide Corrective

STUFF I WROTE

Like I said, not much writing in August. I hope to do something about that in September. A few columns knocked out, a few words of fiction, but not much.

THOUGHT FOR THE MONTH

“I totally understand how batteries feel because I’m rarely ever included in things either.” -Christopher Hudspeth

SIX OF THE BEST… medical conditions you didn’t know you might have

I have a weird medical condition called PVN — so rare that it’s not even on Wikipedia. Do you have any weird conditions?

“Make a Choice” by John McIlveen

My performance of “Make a Choice” by John McIlveen is now live at Tales to Terrify. You can hear it at this link.

It’s a horror story, definitely not for kids. Listen with discretion.

submission and publication update for July 2016

Hey! I wrote stuff this month! And stuff was published, too!

It’s like I’m a writer or something.

PUBLISHED

“Stand Up”, my story of an autistic, nongendered superhero, appeared as Episode 34 of The Overcast podcast.

My narration of “Bluejay” by Edward Ashton appeared as Episode 535 of Escape Pod.

CONSIDERING

87 Bedford, AE, Allegory, Analog, Angry Robot Books, Blue Monday Review, Breakroom Stories, Crossed Lines Superhero Anthology, Damsels in Success, ECM Network, Electric Literature, Fox & Raven Publishing, Giganotosaurus, Grasslimb, Horror Library, Manor House, Omicron’s Automobilia Anthology, OSC:IGMS, Pantheon, Persistent Visions, Read Short Fiction, SFMH Contest, Space Squid, Straeon, The Binge Watching Cure, The Stoneslide Corrective

Also, I got a quick (two-week turnaround) rejection on a novel from Quirk Books. I’m pretty sure this one is going to be the book I put out in November, unless the last publisher it’s out at decides they want it.

STUFF I WROTE

I haven’t done any more work on the pseudonym book, but I did write another five chapters or so of my MG portal fantasy novel. The whole thing is outlined — 54 chapters in total, but they’re no more than 1500 words each (so far). That puts the book about the length of the first Harry Potter. Maybe shorter.

My friend Beau Hall, author of Snapshot, has joined me to form a two-person writing group. So far he’s critiqued the first half of a zombie story I wrote, and I’ve looked at a bunch of his ideas to help him develop them.

I wrote two columns this month, and finished up a third. I also reviewed Swiss Army Man for Escape Pod.

THOUGHT FOR THE MONTH

“I am a carefully perpetrated illusion. I function as a human being because I have very carefully controlled my environment to manipulate myself into productivity – my social life is carefully orchestrated, my social media is designed to allow me the personal contact I need, my outings brief and preplanned.” -Ferrett Steinmetz, author

SIX OF THE WORST… things about the Abramsverse

If you didn’t know there was a Star Trek reboot series, helmed (for lack of a better word) by JJ Abrams, then you probably don’t live on the planet Earth. And even though the latest iteration isn’t written or directed by Abrams, it’s still part of that reboot universe.

Which, for some reason, a lot of Star Trek fans really don’t like.

“Stand Up”

If you read my collection The Clockwork Russian and Other Stories, you got first crack at reading my unpublished story “Stand Up”, about an autistic asexual nongendered superhero. It’s one of the stories I’m proudest of, because it was difficult to write from that point of view. According to one reviewer:

“Stand Up” is that good. I won’t spoil the premise. Roseman is proud of this one, he notes. I think he should be. If this piece isn’t expanded into a full-length book, it at least needs to be optioned by a production company into a film. If either boon does not befall it, then I’d call that a loss not just for genre fans, but anyone who enjoys a good story. It’s easily the best tale here, in my opinion, charging out the gates past a stable full of strong horses. That it hasn’t been published by someone is an indictment against the small press fiction markets. Read it.

Well, someone has rectified that situation, and now you can enjoy “Stand Up” for free in audio, thanks to The Overcast. It’s episode number 34, and you can hear it right now.
