This week’s column is about my favorite sci-fi book series growing up. It still (mostly) holds up today.

There’s no movie or TV series of Planet Builders. But there should be.

Planet Builders was one of my favorite stories as a kid/teen. I reread it a few times (specially the first three books and “Children of the Storm”–those were my favorite). I’ve been reading them to my kids, and they love them, too. Like me, they’re bummed that there’s only 10 books in the series!
It’s fun explaining to them the interesting predictions about future technology when technology didn’t go the way the authors thought. The VHS-style hollovid taps and the dataspools were fun to explain (I got to pull out an old floppy disk to show them). It’s also funny seeing everyone have to use stationary phone/video consoles–they obviously didn’t realize people would have cellphones to facetime each other on!
