submission and publication update for June 2016

The life of the short-story writer can pretty much be boiled down to submitting as much as possible, as often as possible, in hopes that someone will publish your work. To that end, I’m going to start updating you monthly as to what’s out in print (or online), where I have stories under consideration, and what kind of writing I’ve done.

You know, that whole “accountability” thing.

So here goes:

PUBLISHED

Nothing this month. Sad times.

CONSIDERING

AE, Allegory, Analog, Angry Robot Books, Asimov’s, Automobilia, Compelling Science Fiction, Crossed Lines, Damsels in Success, Deep Magic, ECM, Electric Literature, Fox & Raven, Frostfire Worlds, Giganotosaurus, Grasslimb, Manor House, Pantheon, Persistent Visions, Read Short Fiction, Science Fiction and the Medical Humanities, Space Squid, Straeon, The Binge Watching Cure, The Stoneslide Corrective, Way of the Buffalo

STUFF I WROTE

I’ve almost hit 20,000 words on a book I’m writing under a pseudonym, due to its content. I’ve almost decided what’s going to happen in the climactic sequence.

I also finished the first draft of a new horror story about a guy who fetishizes being hospitalized. So there’s that.

I wrote seven columns this month — I like to stay ahead of my deadlines — including one about The X-Files and another about etiquette and manners.

THOUGHT FOR THE MONTH

“If you ever have a world, plan ahead: don’t eat it.” -Juggler, “Cost of Living”, Star Trek: the Next Generation

SIX OF THE BEST… things about Hamilton

Oh, come on, you knew it would be written eventually. The damn show has taken the theater world by storm, and it won like a zillion awards. You’re probably sick of hearing about it by now. Either that, or you listen to it on repeat.

SIX OF THE BEST… decluttering ideas

I’m moving soon, and before you move, you need to get rid of stuff. So I wrote a column about the stuff I’ve gotten rid of in the past month or so.

SIX OF THE BEST… from 20 years ago

When you declutter your house, you go through all your old boxes. Sometimes you find your school newspapers from 20 years ago. And sometimes you discover that you’re still doing the same thing you used to do way back then. Like writing top six lists.

SIX OF THE BEST… reasons to outline your novel

Chris is very matter-of-fact about it — she has to do what she has to do, and if things do get changed back, he’ll never know. In the meantime, he wants to have as much time with her as he can. This touches her heart and they have sexytimes.

In this week’s column, I’m writing about outlines. The above is a bit of an outline I for a short novel I wrote a few years ago. More examples in the column.

SIX OF THE BEST… Dexter adversaries

A show with a superhero character — and, make no mistake, Dexter is a superhero — is only as good as its villains. So, here are six of the best Dexter adversaries. (I say “adversaries” because they’re not all villains. Not really.)

From my latest column, SIX OF THE BEST… Dexter adversaries, at Nerdery Public.
