What did you have to deal with at your parents’ house over the holidays? Their technology, for starters.

SIX OF THE BEST… for December 2014
I was on vacation last week, so here’s a post with my two most recent “Six of the Best” columns:
“Return to Waypoint 5”

“Return to Waypoint 5”, the sci-fi adventure story that got me into Taos Toolbox, is the cover story in this month’s Black Denim Lit. Read for free, or purchase from one of the fine retailers on the page.
SIX OF THE BEST… things about relationships that started out long-distance
About a year ago, I wrote a column extolling the virtues of long-distance relationships. At the time, I was in such a relationship. Six weeks after that post was published, the relationship ceased to be long-distance. And I have to say: it’s been one of the best relationships I’ve been in.
SIX OF THE WORST… things about my new desk
In September, I had to move my desk again, as my area was being co-opted by another team and that led to me getting my third desk in less than a year. But am I going to complain about that? Of course I am!
SIX OF THE BEST… revision tips
I’ve been part of writing groups for a few years now, and one thing I’ve learned is that they’re invaluable in getting people to critically read your work with the goal of you revising it to become the best writing it can be.
“Side Effects”
“Side Effects” is the story of Dr Antoine Hall, an inner-city doctor who just wants to take care of his patients. But when the government, the nationalized health care plan, and corporate-friendly regulations make that near-impossible, he has to find an alternate way of getting his patients the medical care they need.
“Clean Up”

What happens after the superheroes defeat the vampires? Find out in “Clean Up”, a flash piece published by the Dunesteef. (via Episode 166: TWSC – Clean Up by Josh Roseman)
SIX OF THE BEST… writing tips that I could come up with
Look, most of us nerds do want to be writers of some sort — whether it’s music, games, books, or movies, we all think we have these great ideas that would make us zillions of dollars and earn us oodles of fame, if only someone would pay us for them. But if we can’t communicate those ideas effectively, then we’re just wasting our time.
SIX OF THE WORST… ways you can ruin an otherwise-good idea for a genre fiction story
It’s NaNoWriMo time, when thousands of people try to bang out a 50,000-word novel in 30 days and then start submitting it to publishers without any editing or peer-critiquing, and then getting butthurt on the internet when their stories don’t sell.
SIX OF THE BEST… odd-numbered Star Trek films
I think people throw far too much shade at that odd-numbered films. I think it’s time to change that.
SIX OF THE BEST… fandom actor crossovers on Warehouse 13
SIX OF THE BEST… things about being Mark Oshiro (part 2 of 2)
Here’s the second part of my interview with Mark Oshiro. Enjoy!
SIX OF THE BEST… things about being Mark Oshiro (part 2 of 2)
SIX OF THE BEST… things about being Mark Oshiro (part 1 of 2)
A few years ago now, I stumbled upon a website where this guy was watching Buffy the Vampire Slayer for the first time, just like I’d finished doing recently (at the time). I was flabbergasted — a, that someone was doing this, and b, that there was a massive community who made it a point to read and watch this guy watching a TV show.
SIX OF THE WORST… things about an office with a window
It’s amusing to me how films do scenes where people can clearly read hand-lettered signs across the street when they’re in office buildings. I can barely make out the two-story-high ads from the Rooms To Go across the street from my window.
SIX OF THE BEST… Star Trek AU beards
Okay, let me explain how I came up with this: back on September 4, I tweeted a link to Dion Beary playing every Mumford And Sons song. Mr. Beary has a beard. There’s a band called Spock’s Beard. In “Mirror, Mirror”, Spock had a beard.
Movie Review: “Kick-Ass 2”
In my reviews of movies, one thing I always try to mention is the film’s soundtrack. Much as some people writing about Firefly say that the ship is a character, so too is the music in any TV show or film. And sometimes movies that get little or no play can have great soundtracks. Kick-Ass 2 is one such film.
